Earlier exposure to football increases cognitive and memory deficits in former NFL players

It is now commonly studied and understood that pro-football players are prone to neurological problems as a result of the repetitive mild brain injuries endured throughout their pre-pro and professional careers. Published online ahead of print in the journal, Neurology, a study by Stamm et al. of 42 former NFL players (average age = 52) found that exposure to tackle football before the age of 12 years old is associated with increased cognitive and memory deficits later in life. Something to keep in mind as we all tune into the Super Bowl this weekend and when our children ask to sign up for extracurricular football activities.
